Halloween at Finchley Memorial Hospital – 31 Oct 2018

It was Halloween today at the Finchley Memorial Hospital. Lisa decorated the tables with Halloween chocolates and lovely cakes.

Members were also given some colouring crayons and a Halloween picture to colour. Everyone got very busy concentrating on their colouring and produced some really lovely pictures.

We also had a presentation today. Richard Turner from Action Loss Hearing attended to talk to members about the importance of making sure their hearing is checked out. People with hearing problems often feel very isolated and this can also lead to early onset dementia as you become very disoriented. Members were grateful to receive Richard’s talk and Richard also offered to give members a Hearing test. The hospital provided a quiet room on the second floor so that Richard could do the Hearing tests. There were quite a few members who wanted the test.

The session then followed with Halloween Bingo and again this was enjoyable as it was different. Each number that Lisa called was a Halloween shape which had to be coloured by members. The first table to make a line were winners.

It was then time for some quiz questions and Mark our quiz master was ready with some chocolate quiz questions. Questions like What is the name of the 4th Planet. The answer was Mars which is also a chocolate. Members enjoyed the quiz.

It was then time for some singing and as usual the members enjoy. This also included our usual 3 favourite songs which members always get up and dance to.

Lisa finished off the session with a bit of advice for members to make sure they are careful if answering their doors tonight when Trick or Treat callers could also be burglars using this opportunity.

    St John’s Church New Barnet – 30th October 2018

The session started as usual with members chatting and enjoying their teas, coffees and biscuits. Simon our Rotary quiz master then distributed a picture quiz asking the members to identify the persons, whose names were related to towns and cities.

The members enjoyed the quiz and did really well. This was followed by Chair Yoga exercises by Richard, our yoga teacher. The colourful beanbags were used during this session and again this resulted in a very enjoyable atmosphere.

The yoga session was then followed with James Le Bec our musical entertainment. James sang some old-time favourites which members enjoyed listening to and joined in singing followed with some dancing. James is well known for his music quiz using a large dice which becomes challenging amongst members and very enjoyable.

James asked the members to identify the singers before throwing the dice. The members did very well and managed to get more points than the other clubs. Everyone left with a smile.

  • Words of Wisdom from one of our Members

I would like to say a few words with affection about a special club Mollie and I have found.

It has about seven or eight different nationalities as members. They talk and get on well together. They laugh and joke together and also sometimes dance and sing together, even including “She Will Be Coming Round The Mountain When She Comes”!

Strangely enough they also play indoors golf together. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if the whole world behaved like that without conflict or war?

  • Hendon Town Hall – Thursday 25th October

After yesterday’s session at Finchley Memorial Hospital with Elvis, today’s session was not very busy. We had 2 visitors from Barnet Copthall – Jalpa Assani and Annalisa Cellini.

Lisa started the session with True and False quiz questions and then followed with some poetry reading about what makes people happy. Lisa then encouraged members to talk about what makes them happy.

Lisa was then nicely surprised to see an old friend Patricia Waldron arrive. Patricia is a care home manager at Aarandale Manor Luxury care Home in Mill Hill and she arrived today with one of the residents as she was interested to see the dementia club.

Jane then arrived and members were ready for their exercises. The exercises finished off with the 3 music song favourites that members enjoy dancing to and this followed with some social activities – ball catching and Putting golf.

Elvis at Finchley Memorial Hospital – 24th October 2018

It was full house today as members were excited to see Elvis. Lisa started off with quiz questions about Elvis to get members prepared for the Show.

Pete Webb who acts as Elvis then walked into the room in his light Blue Elvis glittering suit. The excitement from that moment to the end was electrifying. Pete was fantastic in every way with his voice as Elvis and also his body moves singing some of the favourite Elvis great hits.

We had a new volunteer today – Timothy who was very helpful during the session helping Melvyn our other volunteer. It was also a lovely surprise to see Jennifer one of the carers that used to attend with her mother Joan.

Everyone had a really amazing time today and can’t wait for me to book Pete again.

  • Sha’arei Tsedek Synagogue – 22nd October 2018

    Sha’arei Tsedek Synagogue – 22nd October 2018

Today’s report is from Justine who led the session at Sha’arei Tsedek Synagogue in Whetstone:

“Our members were served tea, coffee and lovely biscuits & cake at the start of our session and were happy chatting to each other. Justine Khedoory then did a short quiz which everyone participated in.

After a short while, a lovely lady called Jane did some fun exercises with our members which everyone thoroughly enjoyed!

One of our members, the lovely Chrystalla was celebrating a Special Birthday today, so we all sang Happy Birthday to her! After James left, the members continued to chat and there was also table tennis, mini golf & darts! 30 members and carers attended the session with the assistance of five helpers from the synagogue who were:- Justine, Stephen, Judy, Keith & Caroline and Mark one of the charity Trustees.”

  • Finchley Memorial Hospital – 17th October 2018

Today’s session was led by Eleanor with the help of Dr Angela and Melissa.

We had a good turn out and plenty of chat and laughter. We started with a picture quiz about well-known people. This proved to be a popular team activity which everyone could participate in. The most challenging picture was a photo of John Paul the Second! Pat’s team were the winners with twenty correct answers out of twenty. Well done!

Afterwards, we had two games of card bingo. Nearly everyone can play this game without any help and at one point, James was left in charge of three cards while Joan and Lynn were washing up!

It is lovely to see the enjoyment some of our members who have memory difficulties get from playing card bingo and to watch them correcting their carers when they make a mistake.

We finished with another team activity naming things associated with Scotland: food and drink, clothing, sports and pastimes, famous buildings and famous people. Between us we came up with a very long list!

This activity also led to discussions about Scottish holidays. At the end, we listened to a humorous song called ‘Donald Where’s Your Troosers’. It was a high note on which to end our session.

Thank you to our volunteers and especially to Marina, Lynn, Joan and Helen who stepped in to help with the refreshments and washing up in the absence of Melvyn.
