  • ‘Understanding Dementia’ at St Andrews Church Parish Hall, Totteridge – 16th May 2019

    ‘Understanding Dementia’ at St Andrews Church Parish Hall, Totteridge – 16th May 2019

    Lisa was invited to give a talk about ‘Understanding Dementia’ at the Parish Hall at St Andrews Church in Totteridge.

    Tea, coffee and pastries were served before the talk which started at 20:00. The hall was filled with people including about 8 of or own Dementia Club UK members. The hall had very nice facilities which allowed the use of a projector to show presentation slides and an induction loop system which allowed people with hearing problems to hear.

    A lot of people approached Lisa after the talk who themselves have lost loved ones and shared their experiences.

    We would like to thank Marion Archibald, Church Warden, Reverend Tim and Lindy Seago for inviting us and organising the event. A collection was taken at the end of presentation and it was humbling to receive £367.00 which will go towards keeping Dementia Club UK running.

  • Finchley Memorial Hostpital – 15th May 2019

    Our Wednesday dementia club at Finchley Memorial Hospital is always so full. Everyone always looks forward to coming. It was lovely warm day and Lisa announced that if the weather was warm again next week she would bring ice creams. Everyone cheered.

    Lisa welcomed everyone and gave them the updates and details of the next outing to Southend on the 3rd July.

    It was one of the members birthday a few days ago and Lisa surprised Sayeed who is 85 years old with a small birthday cake and candle and everyone sang happy birthday. Sayeed was very overwhelmed.

    {gallery}FMH20190515{/gallery}

    The session followed with a game of bingo and this time we played for full house. They enjoy playing bingo and the prize today was won by Peter and Dawn which was a colourful donkey. They were very pleased.

    After the bingo, we did some singing with the song sheets and as Doris Day recently died, members wanted to sing Que Sera Sera first. The session then followed with Lisa doing some chair exercises with everyone and then the last part of the session was followed playing Tovertafel.

    Everyone left with a smile. Thank you to our volunteers today Angela, Rosa and Mark our Trustee

  • St John’s Parish Centre, Friern Barnet – 14th May 2019

    St John’s Parish Centre, Friern Barnet – 14th May 2019

    It was good to see a few of our usual members today. This is a really lovely venue. Lisa welcomed everyone and provided some painting and colouring for them to do which they enjoyed doing whilst chatting and having their teas and cakes.

    Although Lisa had no volunteers today, the carers step up to help with making teas. One of the members was very keen to do some exercises and was looking forward to seeing Richard our chair yoga instructor. Everyone always enjoys the exercises with Richard as he makes exercising fun.

    The session then followed with James Le Bec and his music entertainment. James played some lovely music and a few of the members were up dancing. The quiz ‘name that tune’ is always great fun too and a challenge throwing the dice to get a six. It was an enjoyable session.

    Thank you to Melissa and Bob, Danielle and Viv for helping setting up the tables and chairs and throughout the session.

  • Sha’arei Tsedek – 13th May 2019

    Our monthly Dementia Club UK session was held on the 13th May at Sha’arei Tsedek Synagogue in Whetstone.

    Our members were served tea, coffee and lovely biscuits and cake at the start of our session and were happy chatting to each other.

    The lovely Jane engaged our members with fun exercises which they thoroughly enjoyed!

    This was followed by a lively session of entertainment provided by the very talented James LeBec. James sang a variety of popular songs to which many of the members and helpers danced. He also did a music quiz and our members had to guess the name of the song! It was great fun! The atmosphere was fantastic! James announced that we had won April’s Quiz of the Month!

    {gallery}SS20190513{/gallery}

    He presented us with a box of Celebration chocolates which all the members ate! (and volunteers!) It was Stephen (one of our lovely volunteers) birthday at the weekend and we gave him a surprise birthday cake and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him. He was very chuffed!

    After James left, the members continued to chat and there was also table tennis & darts for those that wanted to play! 24 members and carers attended the session with the assistance of five helpers from the synagogue who were:- Justine, Gilda, Stephen, Keith, Dot & Judy.

  • Finchley Memorial Hostpital – 8th May 2019

    A very busy session today. Members arrived and sat chatting with their friends whilst enjoying their teas and coffees and cakes and doing a word search.

    Lisa welcomed everyone and reported on recent events. Dr Angela gave a report about the May Day event which was a real success but also commented that Enfield Council had charged £2000 for closing a couple of roads and this has made many people angry as they could not understand why it cost so much to shut a residential road.

    Lisa then talked about upcoming events which everyone noted. It was now time for some Bingo and everyone was concentrating hard on their boards. This was followed by singing and lots of dancing and Lisa’s exercises to music which everyone enjoyed. The last part of the session was playing with The Tovertafel which is. always great fun.

    Big thank you to all the volunteers, Lizzy and Angela our new volunteer, Dr Angela one of our Trustees who came with Melissa who not only helped with the teas and coffees but also danced with a few of the members. Thank you also to Mark our Trustee who helped with the set up of the room. Everyone had a lovely time

  • John Keble Church Edgware – 7th May 2019

    As visitors and volunteers enjoyed tea and cakes whilst colouring in, session leader Danielle made a welcome, including updates of forthcoming events.

    Mollie and June of Northwick Park Rotary were accompanied by Sandy from their Rotary Club on her first visit. Session leader Helen ran a general knowledge quiz, in which everyone was able to participate fully.

    It was a pleasure to have Lisa our Chairman and Mark a Trustee to join us for the whole session and first time member Biddy, with her husband Tony and their carer Fatima.

    {gallery}JohnKeble20190507{/gallery}

    Richard, as ever, ran a great chair yoga session and we all particularly enjoyed the Yoga Hokey Pokey, with Stanmore and Edgware Rotarians Anne and Margaret joining in.

    Entertainer James led a TV and Film themed music quiz, in which Suresh excelled, and Joy and Mollie were first on the dance floor. Thanks to all the helpers and volunteers this week for making it such fun and to Dr Nandini for being on hand for any medical queries.

  • Launch Party with BETTER Barnet Copthall GLL – 2nd May 2019

    The 2nd May 2019 celebrated the official launch of Dementia Club UK and BETTER dementia club at Barnet Copthall Leisure centre. Lisa, Mark, Marina and Andreas arrived early to set up the room which was in one of the large studios.

    The tables were beautifully decorated with tablecloths and flowers, the pull up banners were set up and the sandwiches and cakes were arranged. Some green balloons were also blown up with the BETTER logo and these added very nicely to all the decorations.

    When everyone arrived, Lisa gave her welcome speech, giving a brief history of how she set up the dementia club and the aims of the charity to continue raising awareness and also to open more dementia clubs as the need is great. She also mentioned about upcoming events and had flyers displayed. Lisa then welcomed members and announced the special guests below;{gallery}COPTHALL20190502/Speaches{/gallery}

    • The Mayor of Barnet – Councillor Reuben Thompstone
    • Rhiannon Morgan – Regional Health Manager GLL
    • Christopher Parker – General Manager Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre
    • Gillian Kelly – Partnership Manager GLL
    • Jalpa Assani – Community Sports Manager – GLL Barnet

    The Mayor of Barnet then followed with a brief message, followed by a few words from Rhiannon. It was time to cut the cake and as with any cutting of the cake traditions, Lisa always puts a firework candle to celebrate. The Mayor then had some help in cutting the cake from Lisa, Jalpa, Rhiannon and Annalisa.

    {gallery}COPTHALL20190502/CakeFood{/gallery}

    Lisa announced to everyone the beautiful celebration cake made and donated by Julianna Martins – Head Chef at Carlton Court Care Home and her team. Julianna also made some very small cupcakes with the BETTER logo and the Dementia Club UK logo. A huge thank you to Julianna for making these cakes which is really appreciated by Dementia Club UK.{gallery}COPTHALL20190502/Dancers{/gallery}

    It was then time for Annalisa’s dance group to perform and they were really fantastic dressed up with their colourful silk sashes around their waists and other props. They danced a few old time musical classics which everyone really enjoyed.

    We also had a birthday to celebrate today as it was one of the members Margaret who came with her husband and son. Lisa as usual is always prepared with any birthdays as the tradition is a firework candle. Everyone sang and wished Maggie a happy birthday and when the firework candle was set off it unfortunately also set the fire alarm. I think Maggie and her family will remember this in amusement! Maggie then enjoyed a little dance with her son John. Everyone was then ready for sandwiches which were really delicious (from M&S of course!).{gallery}COPTHALL20190502/Elvis{/gallery}

    It was then time for Elvis who arrived and was getting himself ready. Pete Webb who acts as Elvis is always a great hit with everyone and was wearing his whites today.

    Some of our members were also dressed up today in fancy dress up costumes and hats – Kevin and Melissa were both dressed to party and ready to dance. Kevin brought his mother in law Mable in a wheelchair. Nothing was going to stop Mable attending today as she is still recovering from a new hip operation. Mable was cheerful and very happy especially when Elvis was very close singing to her.

    Elvis interacted with many of the members and our Rotarians from Mill Hill Rotary Club were also receiving special attention from Elvis. The atmosphere was electric as Elvis moved around singing. This was a very successful launch.

    My thanks goes out to; Marina and Andreas for coming early to help with the set up, Christopher Parker the General Manager and his team for setting up the tables and chairs, Jalpa and Annalisa for blowing up balloons and generally helping with the set up, Our Trustees – Mark and Dr Angela for their help and support throughout the session, Annalisa and her dance group for a fantastic performance. Members commented how they would love to see them again.

    A big thank you to Carlton Court Care Home for donating the celebration cake and cupcakes which were delicious and enjoyed And a big thank you to everyone that came to support the launch.

  • Finchley Memorial Hostpital – 1st May 2019

    Finchley Memorial Hostpital – 1st May 2019

    It was as usual a busy session. Members were really looking forward to attending today to see and hear Helen Tierney. Helen entertains by playing the Harp, piano and accordion. One of the members Brian was especially looking forward to this day. He couldn’t wait and was crossing off the days.{gallery}FMH20190501{/gallery}

    Lisa welcomed everyone and announced upcoming events. Members were also busy doing a word search and a quiz to identify 15 famous faces and 9 countries to identify their national flowers. This wasn’t easy but members always enjoy the challenge.

    One of the carers Ernie Glenister then prepared and brought some old photos and documents going back to his childhood at school and wanted to share this with members. In his talk to members, Ernie goes back 79 years ago when he was 4 years old and his brother was 2 years old and they were evacuated in May 1940. They attended a nursery in Canonbury, Islington run by Lady Islington and the whole nursery was sent by coaches to Dyrham Park, near Bath, Lady Islington’s country seat.

    Ernie was later transferred with another lad onto a nearby farm. His brother now aged 5 and Ernie now aged 7 came home to London in 1943 then sent to Loughborough due to V1’s and V2’s returning home in early 1945.

    Lisa thanked Ernie for his very informative talk and copies of his photos and documents which are published on this website with his permission. It was then time for Helen to perform and everyone welcomed her. She played beautifully as usual there was singing and also some dancing.

    Thank you today to Lizzy, (Dr Angela and Mark our Trustees) and Melissa for their help and support during the session. This was an enjoyable session and everyone left with a smile.
